How to Record Packing Videos for E-commerce

Choose Your Recording Method

You have two main options: manual recording with a smartphone or basic camera, or automated recording with dedicated software like ASCAM. Manual recording is free but time-consuming and error-prone. Automated recording costs money upfront but saves hours of labor and never misses an order.

Set Up Your Camera

Mount your camera above the packing table, pointing straight down. The camera should capture the entire packing area, including the shipping label, all items, and the box or bag being sealed.

• Camera height: 60-100cm above the table
• Use a wide-angle lens (100+ degrees) to capture the full table
• For best coverage, use 2 cameras: overhead + front angle
• IP cameras with RTSP protocol work best with automated software

Ensure Good Lighting

Proper lighting is critical. Barcodes, QR codes, and product details must be clearly visible in the video. Poor lighting causes blurry footage that is useless as evidence.

• Use overhead LED panel lights (avoid direct sunlight that creates glare)
• Eliminate shadows on the packing area
• Minimum 500 lux at the table surface
• Test by reading barcodes on your camera's live feed before going live

Record Every Order

For video evidence to be effective, you must capture the complete packing process for every single order. A missed order is an unprotected order.

Organize and Store Videos

Videos are only useful if you can find them when a dispute arrives. Organize videos by order number and date. Store them for at least 30-90 days, as marketplace dispute windows typically extend 15-30 days after delivery.

• Name files with order numbers for easy searching
• Store locally on an SSD or external HDD (1TB stores 3-6 months)
• Set up automatic deletion of videos older than 90 days
• Back up high-value order videos to a second drive
